The world is awash with a variety of energy sources. Fossil fuels — including natural gas, oil and coal accounted for more than 81 % of all energy consumed in 2018. Renewable energy sources such as solar power, wind power biomass, hydroelectricity and biomass comprise 14 percent. Nuclear energy is 5 percent. Different countries use different mixes of energy sources, and are able to balance the needs of the economy with environmental concerns.

Nature’s energy comes in many forms including sun, wind waves, and ocean. When harnessed and converted into more practical forms of energy, such as electricity or heat, these are referred to as primary sources. These energy sources become non-renewable sources of energy once they have been exhausted.

The environment is harmed by many fossil fuels as well as some other non-renewable sources of energy. Mining oil, for instance can devastate the planet’s virgin forests. Fracking (hydraulic fracture) can cause earthquakes and water pollution. Carbon dioxide is released when coal is burnt which causes global warming.

Fortunately there are many promising energy sources are sustainable and renewable. Wind, solar and hydropower can, for example, generate electricity without the need to dig for new sources.

Other sources of sustainable energy are emerging, such as tidal and wave power. However, to be utilized on a large scale they must have effective distribution networks. This requires the use non-renewable energies to build these networks. Therefore, these sources aren’t capable of meeting the majority of our energy needs. But it’s important keep in mind that prices for renewable energy equipment have dropped significantly in the past few years, and the efficiency is growing rapidly.
